SPVS/TNC - Carbon Sequestration and REDD Project in Brazil

The Action Project Against Global Warming is carried out in a partnership effort by the non governmental organization The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Sociedade de Pesquisa em Vida Selvagem e Educação Ambiental (SPVS) and sponsored by American Electric Power, Chevron and General Motores. The carbon sequestration project developed by SPVS fights global warming and at the same time helps conserve the largest remaining part of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The project focuses on maintaining well preserved natural areas and, in the case of degraded areas, on forest regeneration or restoration through planting of native Atlantic Forest trees. The activities are developed in natural reserves belonging to SPVS, located in the protected area of Guaraquecaba (north coast of Paraná State), comprising about 19.000 of forest area. The project, besides contributing to the removal of excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere provide also further benefits and the environment and to local communities, such as: Increase of refuge area for countless species of plants and animals, - maintenance of biological diversity and ecosystem quality of the region, - Supply of potable water to the urban population of Antonina (18.000 people) and to the communities on Ilha Rasa (600 people),- Creation of new jobs,- Development of new income generation alternatives for local communities.
