  • For constable duties the 57-mm gun mount will have the same deer caught in the head lights freeze effect....

  • Yeah, but there was something about training a 5 inch 38 on somebody that got their attention.

    USCGC Midgett '74-'76

  • its about time the coast guard gets wat they need and deserve.

  • That Bofors 57mm is dead accurate. It has a 120-round magazine and a rate of fire of about 220 shots/minute.

The computer aiming, rate of fire and the ability to change ammunition types quickly makes the gun far better in today's times.

Gone are the days of missions that required big bore shells.

Besides, a Bofors can knock out a large ship's controls (bridge) rendering the ship dead in the water.

But sea battles between big ships are gone and big lumbering shells are old tech.

  • Something the 378's have is an "accordion" joint in the hull amidships... this allows the ship's hull to bend in the wind, so to speak...

Question: does the Bertholf have this feature?... seems pretty important, especially in rough seas such as those often experienced in the Gulf of Alaska...

  • Why are they happy they downgraded from a 75mm gun to a 57mm?

  • Well, the ship has to be this large if you intend to operate her at sea for 90 days or more without a large navy replenishment ship nursing her every week. She isn't a patrol boat that spends two or three weeks at sea, we're talking three months.

  • looks like a frigate!

  • nice
