@JMCporsche - yeah, it's not just porsches. Drive further afield if you can afford the fuel in your gas guzzler and be amazed there are other cars that can go at the same speed. But what's the point when there are speed limits and other cars to slow you down?
I own a Smart CDi and looking at this video the exhaust pipe on this Smart is on the right or passengers side which makes this car a Mitsubishi petrol Smart.
I ve sat in an driven a left hand drive 450 Smart Cdi and due to the layout of the little 799cc diesel engine the exhaust pipe is on the left.
My 2010 CDi like the old 450 model has the exhaust pipe on the left which makes this red Smart Pure a gas or petrol version not a CDi diesel.
The cost of developing an engine for a car is incredibly high and the little 799cc Turbo Diesel engine is only fitted to the Smart ForTwo when usually to maximise profits the engine is used by other car companies but not in this case.
The CDi engine is expensive to produce whilst the gas version is sourced from Mitsubishi and therefore cheaper to manufacture.
Legislation in the Us make selling tiny diesels extremely difficult but the older 45hp diesel was sold in Canada.
@llandudnoboy *sigh* i live in Canada and i would love to own one cause its so much more efficient than its gasoline counter part and is more powerful too. T^T But why is its production cost more? (sorry if its a stupid question) diesel doesnt have spark plugs or distributors cause the compression re-ignites the fuel. if anything i thought it would be less cause it has less parts but has some issues starting in cold whether.
The Smart CDi 799cc was first introduced in Europe way back in 1998 and was always in lefthand drive for the European market.
It only arrived here in the Uk in Febuary 2009 due to the requirement of Mercedes to convert the car into right hand drive for the Uk market.
Mercedes may bring the diesel Smart to the Us but somehow i doubt it because sales of the petrol Smart have been in decline in. America and due to the high cost of production it makes no economic sense.
@TheCanada1 How does the smart behave in the winter? I'd like to get one but I am not too sure.
