Fred Frederick George Griffing III and his ancestors have been Californians for several generations. A hundred years ago Fred's uncle, Pastor Yato, was Harvey Clars' partner collecting junk in a horse drawn wagon in Oakland. Today, Clars Auctions in Oakland deals in fine paintings, and Fred is going to submit two paintings for an upcoming sale. Over the years Fred's paintings have appeared at this auction, always submitted by a third party who bought paintings from Fred for too little money. Fred will attempt to submit his own this time, but generally they don't accept consignments from artists themselves. Fred may misattribute these two paintings in his attempt to get them in the catalogue--all part of a system that keeps Fred an outsider, profiting the least from his work. This is the beauty of the art market. Live and learn.
