In February of 2005, Italian reporter Giuliana Sgrena was taken hostage in Iraq. But after 28 days, she was rescued by an Italian intelligence agent, Nicola Calipari. Sgrena and Calipari thought they'd escaped to safety, when an approaching an American check point, guards opened fire on their car. Sgrena was wounded; Calipari, was killed. Checkpoints are a dangerous fact of life in Iraq. U.S. soldiers have been killed by bombers at checkpoints, and innocent Iraqis have been shot while approaching them. In order to help rectify this, Relume Technologies was commissioned to develop Check point lights to warn on coming traffic that a check point was up ahead. This proved challenging as the lights needed to be seen 2.5 miles away in 135 degree ambient temperature. Each LED light is remote controlled, has strobe and flash capability along with a day/ night setting. Since the installation of these lights friendly fire has been nearly eliminated at Check Points.
