The first step actually came before this video; that is getting the dog interested in the coon hide. Play with the dog using a coon tail or coon hide. Don't leave the tail/hide in the dog's pen because then the dog will lose interest. Only use the tail/hide when you're present and playing with the dog. Before feeding is best, because then the dog thinks of feeding as a reward for playing with the hide. In this video, I leashed the dog up. I then drug the coon hide with a rope and hung it in a tree. I let the dog go, so he could learn how to trail the coon scent. Sometimes the dog won't immediately start trailing the scent. He's a puppy, so expect him to play with sticks, pine cones, etc. Just give him 10-15 minutes and see if his nose will take over. If not, leash him back up, play with him some more to re-gain his interest, then drag the coon again to the same place it was before and hang it up, unleash the dog again and be patient patient patient... In this video, you see my pup trailing the scent. He actually gets in a hurry and runs past the scent. Then, he realizes it and trails the scent all the way to the tree where the coon hide is. He sits there for a moment then loses interest. He's learning, slowly but surely! Small improvements mean A LOT!!! Patience patience patience!!!

  • If the dog is trailing your scent, you need a helping hand. Have someone keep the dog on a leash, while you drag the hide. Then holler back to them and let them know when you put the hide up a tree. When the dog gets to the tree, you will be standing nearby. It will then be easy to teach him to get up on the tree and focus on the coon. Give it a try.

  • I've uploaded 4 videos. It's really difficult to train the puppy and video at the same time because I'm usually working with him while I'm by myself, but I'll do my best to get some more up. Glad you enjoy them! Some dogs will naturally hunt, but a trained dog will be MUCH better!
