@Wilkopops they said "asalam alekum" and "alekum salam". this is a muslim gretting which means "peace be with you" and was popular in the black community in the 60s and 70s. the brother bell character is a spoof on the black panthers, who might have used that phrase.

Oh God. I was a little boy when this skit came out. It's exactly as I remembered it. This was a truly hilarious skit. Classic.

It seems to me that NBC wanted this show to fail from the start. To put a show like this on at 8 p.m is madness. AND It was opposite Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley! Obviously it would not last, but Pryor is forever a comedy genius, legend and icon.
You should all check out a skit from the fourth episode, which was a filthy Richard Pryor Roast. It's high-larious. It's in the related videos.
