Demonstrating some backcountry baking using my alcohol stove, the Trangia. This is the "dry baking" method as opposed to "steam baking" which uses a bit of water in the pot while the food "bakes" in a Ziploc bag, silicone cup, or any other container that can withstand steam temperatures. Dry baking works exactly like your kitchen oven, so you get the same crispy texture. Dry baking also allows you to control the cooking temperature and can get much hotter than steam baking. The disadvantage is that you can't use a coated pot and probably wouldn't want to use a titanium pot as the high heat could make it warp. It takes a long time to cook, but once it's set up you can let it be while you go about other tasks. If you're getting tired of the usual grits or oatmeal for breakfast or you'd like a hot treat before crawling in your sleeping bag, give this a try!

  • Hey man! I tried this with some Bisquick and a SEVA 123 and it worked!

    Thanks CC !!

  • @AGNOSSI Glad to hear it!

  • Whoa! How easy was that! Nicely done..

Wanna bet you couldn't do that W/ just a gallon can?

    MacGyver yourself a lid.

Inside rack can just be 6 coat hanger wires stabbed through 12 small evenly spaced holes you punched in the sides high enough to serve the purpose.

Anywhoo, I'm moving up to the "Bemco Backpacker Oven"

  • @Tankdriver100 You'd have to be careful using a gallon paint can or food can. They have a thin plastic coating that will burn off and make your muffin quite unpleasant and possibly toxic. Same goes for coat hanger wire, it's coated and will burn off.

  • @ColoradoCamper Oh!

    Don't even think paint can.....

But seriously most every kind stove or substitute, dual purpose, has to be gotten hot to vaporize all the various coatings no matter how slight...

    Same for cast iron cookware.

    SOP..

  • @ColoradoCamper Thanks for the tip.

I'll just get it smoken hot, over red hot coals in my "Deadwood Stove".

    Then I'll bake a muffin.

    There ya go.

  • @manfromupton I just happened across mine at a thrift store, so they only had the one and I don't think they are made anymore. There are a few for sale on ebay right now for under $10. I just searched "crock pot bake" and they turned up. But honestly this will work just as well with any aluminum or steel pot. And you can make your own rack from a computer muffin fan guard among many possibilities. Hope that helps.

  • @ColoradoCamper can you source any more of these? i'd be happy to buy one from you.

  • @seattlesrain That's about what I paid for mine. I hope you enjoy messing around with it!

  • I had to come back to this video and let you know that I found one of the pots in a thrift store today for 79 cents and will be trying it out ASAP, Thanks
