My 2008 Subaru Outback L.L.Bean departing from my boathouse (at my island cottage) onto the ice. There is 20 to 40cm of soft-pack snow on the lake (with hard pack areas). Michelin X-ice tires are on the car. Recorded Late March, 2008.

  • Of course, if you want more traction on snow, apply full throttle.

  • @Streetracingpunk72 the older style manual transmission subaru's were a 50/50 power ratio. my 2000 forester has yet to fishtail except on sheer ice. (DONT brake on ice, use the clutch/handbrake to slow you down first and act as traction control)

  • @tblue3cibm how?

  • quattro ftw ;p

  • AT or MT?

  • really? I have a manual '01 outback with the 2.5 so that is useful info thx.

  • x-ice is a really good tire. we had them on my mom's rwd van last year and we never got stuck. the year before, we got stuck a few times.

  • lol if you sent more power to the back, THAT would cause it to oversteer...or spin.

in situations like this, more power to the front is actually better.

  • Front wheel bias is a good thing in the snow. The engine is right over the wheels, allowing the front wheels to get traction. In the snow a front wheel bias AWD system is the best. I have no idea what you're talking about the front wheels spinning. You've clearly never driven in a RWD or AWD ( Rear bias) car in the snow.
