He's right, no tuner needed. Besides, why would you want to carry around that monster meter with you when going portable? I have an FT-897D and got it because it's a, "One radio do all." No way do I want to carry more items than needed. Surely a monster meter is out of the question !
If you set up the buddipole properly you don't need the tuner. If you "have to use" the tuner something isn't right. If you use the tuner to "get the whole band" without adjusting the antenna you are introducing losses in attenuation through the coax. Only at a 50 ohm match does the coax present its rated attenuation (dB loss/100'). I would leave the tuner at home. Then again, if you are taking a buddipole in the first place weight and bulk aren't an issue. Great antenna though!
