@bankerboyshort I knew Denver really well, I was best friends with his grand daughter... he was one of the nicest people i have ever met... I lived up the road from them, my grandfather was Ewing Miracle and my dad is Ernie, I loved growing up in ages it was so much fun all the kids could just run around and no one had to worry about where we was cause everyone watched out for everyone else.

@FRSGUMP Sunshine is part of the town of Harlan as I remember. It was like a little section of the town, but I believe it was inside the city limits.

@tacoma200 That's the way it is...just like it was. When I was there last I drove up a creek and asked a guy on his porch for some directions. He asked me where I lived after I left Harlan. I told him I spent some years up where the Yankees live--and that happiness is a Yankee city in your rear view mirror. Just as I was saying that his son stepped out on the porch. He spit in the yard, looked contemptuously and said, "F***ing Yankees!" I was home.

The marijuana leaf was there to denote that Harlan was a marijuana producing area--it only accidentally landed around Kenvar. Sunshine, as I recall, was part of Harlan Co, but not right in Harlan--but I could be wrong on that. It is lovely country. I live in Texas now and have lived in many other places, but my heart will always be there.
I love this! My first teaching job was at the Ages School back in 1977. I was green, right out of college and transplanted from Massachusetts. Taught at Ages for two years, and then was transferred to Cawood Elem. where I was for five years until going back to New England and settling in Maine. I loved the people of Harlan County and my time there. Thanks so much for sharing this!

@jjvski19 You know, I actually spent many years in New England--first Connecticut for grad school--then stayed and taught at Wesleyan, Hartt college, Eastern Conn. & U. Conn. Never felt at home there. It's a different country. Returned south in 1997. Unless God says otherwise, I'll live and die in Dixie. Loved what I saw of Maine--but most yankees agree with me--the south is a friendlier & more welcoming place. Glad you liked Harlan and the good people there.

Harlan, KY, no place like it. The beauty, history, the mining, the feuds, the poverty, the good people, proud people. :) The Scot's Irish, the music still influenced by the old country. That's the way I see it anyway.

@tacoma200 I think you see it pretty damned close--but don't forget the antipathy toward Yankees and big government--Self determination is a main feature of the independent people of the mountains--though the Yankee government has tried to corrupt us in recent years. It won't work. We've got self-determination in our blood.

@bankerboyshort You're more than welcome. I was both shocked and saddened to hear about your dad. We had a lot of good time together. I still think of him and those times often.
