This excellent 2 DVD set provides a comprehensive and invaluable guide to the process of creating an original piece of drama.
Filmed with some of the world's leading theatre companies including Goat Island (US), Forced Entertainment (UK), Sankai Juku (Japan), it gives examples of the different methodologies used by them to manage the devising process. It covers: getting started - research strategies and sourcing 'raw ingredients'; how to refine a piece and decide upon aims and objectives; games, strategies and methods used by professional practitioners to work up ideas and generate movement and text, including visualisations and Artaudian techniques for generating material unconsciously; how to organise and refine material including techniques for editing, scoring, recording and mapping; techniques to overcome creative blocks, how to manage the process and maintain a schedule, devising for a space and producing a final script/ score.

The final section looks at outcomes and polishing, including diction/delivery, physical clarity and definition.

The second DVD is aimed at teachers and provides extra supporting material including: guidance on how professional practice can be used in an educational setting, extra detail on troubleshooting and managing the devising process, information on health and safety (warm ups, electrical safety, safety of set etc) as well as evaluation and assessment criteria. In addition to this, the DVD contains a wealth of music, texts, sounds and images which can be used as possible staring points for student pieces.
