On August 4th 2003, 15 years old Terrence Ali was beaten to death by three men. Every August 4th Moonie Ali, Terrence's mother holds a memorial for him to remember him and raise awareness regarding the effects of violence.

Small part of Speech of Rev. Walter J. Kelly for the Terrence Ali Memorial Service

" As all you might know, this is the 8th Anniversary of Terrence's Death. And as we do the the Math he would be 23 years old. As I look around and was listening, some of his friends now have children, and these children weren't even born when this terrible tragedy happened and it reminds us that there is death and tragedy and horrible horrible stuff that happen's in our communities and in our families. But life also goes on, and we thank God that alongside death there's birth and so Moonie we are here to support you again and we feel bad. And even as this weekend as we know we had to listen for the big buildup of Caribana, and we now that that is a annual reminder of the terrible tragedy that happened to Terrence. And again this Caribana there was more pain more suffering, and there is another mother there that has to bury her son. And so as we think of life as we think of family, we know that we are living in an imperfect world, and we're living in a world that i would like to say where there's evil and where there' are people with evil intent. And i think what's hard sometimes as i listen to Moonie and to other, its hard for us to come to terms with injustice of what happens, because the world goes on, life goes on. But where here at the cemetery in front of Terrence's tombstone with his grieving mother and with friends who probably wonder what kind of man he would be, what he would be doing, would he be married, would he have children, we don't know any of those things. So today we want to reflect on how we're living and i want us to reflect also on our behaviours but more importantly on how we want to be remembered." Rev. Walter J. Kelly, TPS Chaplain
