English Profile is a long term, collaborative project designed to enhance the learning, teaching and assessment of English worldwide. In collaboration with academics, teachers and education authorities worldwide, English Profile explores how learners of English progress through the levels of the Common European Framework.
Michael McCarthy uses corpus data to illustrate the ways in which native speakers and learners of English start their conversational turns. He shows that some elements of learner speech patterns are determined by the tasks they are generally given, and suggests that the English Profile project could help develop better teaching and testing materials to allow them to produce more natural speech.
