One of the unsung gems of 1970s cinema "Smile" is a deft satire on the beauty pageant industry, written by Jerry Belson and directed by Michael Ritchie. Bruce Dern, Barbara Feldon, and Michael Kidd star, while among the young actresses cast as pageant contestants you will find Melanie Griffith, Annette O'Toole, Joan Prather and Colleen Camp. See this movie!
i looked at this one time and it was excellent!

This was filmed in Santa Rosa the summer of 1974, and it is the town I once knew. Some of the gals I went to high school with...nostalgia piece.

@wlhardy very underrated. maybe it was because it was overshadowed by Altman's Nashville and big theatres pulled Smile after a week which seemed like a shame. kinda made me wish I was born sooner rather than the same year this was released to enjoy it back then as I do now. I will be watching it again tonight on TCM as Robert Wuhl spotlights it in a triple play of his favorites. and I'm happy he's saving the best for last. ;)

How this movie eluded me in the 1970s I don't know--I don't even remember seeing trailers for it, which is weird considering how many movies I saw during that decade. Guess it just didn't get any publicity. I saw "Smile" for the first time on HBO in 1980 and consider it one of the best comedies ever! I love Bruce Dern in this role, Barbara Feldeon is great, too; so is Eric Shea. An underrated movie!
