Happiness is elusive and fate is fickle in Rudolph Maté's tragic romance set in New York during World War II. Ruth Wood (Jane Wyman) lives a life quite ordinary until a chance meeting during a rainstorm with a charming soldier named Arthur (Van Johnson). The pair falls in love instantly, and life is worth living for a while. But when Arthur is shipped overseas, tragedy strikes, and it seems fate is conspiring to rain heartbreak on the lovers.
