So many images of Atlas show him holding the Earth ... this is not his mythological role. He was given the punishment of holding the Heavens up. Or, in another way of thinking about it, he held the Heavens and Earth apart. This becomes interesting when you see how the Hermeticists' diagrams of the body had the 5 known planets and 2 luminaries at the chakra points in the same order as they were seen in the Earth-centred model of the cosmos. He may symbolize the force between chakras
