  • I personally believe the ESV Study Bible is the best Bible on the market. It's faithful to the manuscripts and is balanced on doctrines. I highly recommend it.

  • @sirsaint88 Scripture says that the very words of God, not just the thoughts of God are inspired. God not only inspired thoughts of scripture but the very words and details. NIV or NLT are good in their own right for the everyday person. But, words like "propitiate" are the only correct English word to use in passages like Romans 3:23-25; Hebrews 2:17; 1 John 2:2 and 1 John 4:10 - which the NIV or NLT change to "sacrifice of atonement" or "sacrifice of sin". Propitation is an important doctrine.

  • Mark is cool, ESV is cool. But perhaps people should actually read through "A" bible or any other bible from Genesis to Revelation before saying that version a is the best and version b sucks.... so on and so on.

  • I'm surprised the NET Bible is not in the discussion. The Nestle-Aland Greek text recently changed from the RSV to the NET Bible which demonstrates the confidence among scholars. Also I admire the NET Bible's translator's ongoing improvements through an interactive process using knowledgeable contributions from around the world.

  • thanks for your reply man. I think the ESV has been an answer to prayer for a lot of folks who used the even more wooden NASB. I can look at the ESV or the NIV and retrieve the same meaning. There is a great article by Mark Strauss I believe called " Why the English standard version shouldn't become the standard version." I think the ESV needs to be revised and become the ESV2. To me it's just more viable to translate into a more native tongue. That's why I embrace and hand out NLT/NIV.

  • The ESV is a wooden and archaic translation. A little more idiomatic than the NASB thankfully. Not one I'd ever hand out. I am glad that some people in the reform circles are blessed by it. I'd rather hand out the NIV or NLT.
