@mts0628, I totally agree with the scenario of downed towers, or possibly even the destruction of satellites. Where would we be? Most people are not even using landline phones any longer. One of my personal goals this year was to learn morse code and look into joining a local amateur radio club. If you have any suggestions for my journey, please share!

A couple of things; practice your Morse code as much as Michael texts and you'd blow him away. You just need to get your speed and proficiency up. Sure Michael may have an advantage of a Blackberry as compared to your boat anchor, but when those towers go down or the service is interrupted, where's he at? What's going to stop you? Nothing that you can't fix yourself. I'll take Morse code and Amateur Radio any day. Plus, what' so cool about being a fast texter? Nothing- any child can do that...
A HAM operator, who can't say "Morse", and instead says "Morris"? Second of all, the Leno show was using a speed key. My friend Jim, who is blind, doesn't even need to copy code; he just hears the words, at about 60 WPM. You cannot type with two thumbs at 60WPM.

Sending via Morse Code is actually much faster than texting. Your 'experiment' was flawed in that you are not proficient at sending Morse. A typical Amateur Radio operator (Ham) as demonstrated on the Jay Leno Show a while back can indeed send faster than a typical 'texter'. Morse Code wins out easily.
