UPDATE: Article with reaction to this video

PLEASE Leave a COMMENT and RATE this video!!

A short clip from local news showing a residential fire caused by the chimney of a wood burning stove. The FFs on the roof have no SCBA on while venting the roof. There is nobody butting the ladder. There does not appear to be a secondary means of escape from the roof. Just about every single rule for vertical ventilation is broken. Luckily nobody got hurt, or did someone get hurt? How much smoke did those FFs inhale?

UPDATE: Also noticed that there doesn't seem to be any roof ladders in use either!!

  • Just so EVERYBODY knows, I work for Red Deer Emergency Services (Red Deer is a city of just under 100'000 people) and this is the County Volunteer Fire Service, NOT the city!

  • @canadian5687 Just to be clear Mr. or Ms. Medic, this is not Red Deer County of which I am a proud, non-unionized member. This is elsewhere in Alberta.

  • @steven When the fire is in the attic space, which window will ventilate the area??

  • @jacobstearn14048 I can assure you that I am not an armchair QB. If any of my FFs ever did something like this they would be benched and/or let go. In fact we benched a guy for walking away from a ladder while a crew was on the roof. He failed to understand why this was unacceptable and he is no longer on the department. The whole point of this video is to learn from it. I use this video the same way I use videos of FFs attacking car fires without SCBA. Laugh, scream, or cry at them, and LEARN.

  • This was a chimney fire with extention to the structure of the residence? If it was only steam why would they cut the hole in the house? They had to have known there was fire in the wall or else why cut the vent hole. They should have had full PPE, 2nd means of eggress, hoseline to protect the guy doing the cut. I could go on.

It is a good video for training purposes. I will include it and use it in our department.

Are you with that firedepartment or the news or the home owner?

  • I am with a department in the area.

I suppose that I should add that this is a very small department with a low call volume. I would think that they do know the right way to do this but got caught up in the moment and fell victim to skill fade. Use it or lose it.

  • my dad is a fireman and if anything like this happened, the people would be fired, one little mistake like that can cause people to lose their lives

  • @steven200312 Siding and roofing are cheap to replace, that is if the house doesn't burn down because you didn't FULLY check for extention. If you knew anything about building construction you know that that's an attic SPACE, not room. And unlike older brick homes in the UK, it's easy to saw through a wood frame wall rather than solid brick. And a vent hole is not required in every fire, it just depends on where the fire was.

  • @carryorchid Sorry man, just seen the RD advocate and seen it wasn't our turnout gear so (Ass)umed it was county...my bad

  • Lot of damage for nothing! attics here have windows.

  • @steven200312 it keeps our carpenters busy and we open windows too, with the sharp end of the halligan tool

  • Why does every fire require a whole to be cut in the roof???? In the UK we open windows!

  • @carryorchid regradless of weather they know how to do it, practice like its the real thing, thats why we train right? even training in our business is dangerous. Still should have had a guy on the base of the ladder and full PPE.
