Wade in the Water - The Aleta Greene Band

The Aleta Greene Band, -- Jeff Wilson on keys, Mark Stewart on drums, and Mark Russell on bass and directing the music -- are showcased at the top of this full-court press jazz take on the traditional song, grown from a Bob Baldwin arrangement, until vocalist Aleta Greene enters and stacks it into a blues meets coloratura ad-libbed spiritual medley. The birds heard at the beginning, perfectly on cue, were part of the ambiance in the Sculpture Garden of the Baltimore Museum of Art, where this was recorded -- at the Summer Jazz Concerts in 1998.
