  • Amongst South Dakotans, Mount Rushmore is quite comtroversial. The mountain defaced to create the monument was sacred to Lakota tribes and called Six Grandfathers. The mountain was eternally entrusted in treaty by the U.S. government to the Lakota via the Fort Leramie Treaty in 1868. It was forcefully seized by military force in 1877.

  • Whoa...Really!! That's pretty wrong. They sure don't mention that on the placards in the observatory. The U.S. govt. has done so many unconscionable things to the Native Americans that it doesn't surprise me that Rushmore is among them. It's too bad. The monument is wonderful for the reasons I mentioned but I guess it carries some dark historical baggage as well. Thanks for the insight.

  • Another great video. I'm really looking forward to seeing how you use all of this video footage from you complete trip. Duane with myRVspace(dot)com and Passport America

  • Thanks for sticking around Duane. Good to hear from you. I am actually presenting the website and as part of a conference session I'm leading on videoblogging at BlogOrlando.

  • Sorry folks ain't gonna wanna hear this but it's true that that where Rushmore is now was/is considered sacred to the Lakota people and carving Washington, Jefferson, et al. into the mountain is the equivalent to Jews of carving a swastika into the Western Wall in Jerusalem.

  • i wonder what KARL PILKINGTON would think of this

  • thanks for sharin' your video.. hopefully i get to visit mt rushmore soon.. thanks again..

  • wow its crazy to see the mountain goats again... i live here and remember seeing mountain goats on pretty much a daily basis .. that was a while ago though... they have seemed to disappear all together... i miss them

  • yeah mount rushmore is a pretty awesome thing to see. living in south dakota its something that ur like yeah we no its there but dont really realize that ppl from other places really want to come and see it. its cool that u took the time to even come to a place like south dakota. its pretty amazing here but its kinda our little secret.

  • I doubt they will put Bush up there. Great vidoe.

  • I'm VERY happy that you guys got to see Mount Rushmore...Hope you loved it as much as us South Dakotan's are proud of it.

  • Bless you!

  • To add insult to injury, the four presidents chosen- were those in office during the "manifest destiny periods," that is the terms during which the illegal acquisition of "reserved" Native American lands occurred. If you're ever in a South Dakota bar- don't bring up religion, politics, abortion or Mount Rushmore. It was fun to watch your travels.
