Everything seemed to happen in slow motion, yet it was going too fast for me to be able put it all together. It was all a blur of images and sounds flashing through my head. The loud sound of the gun, the bullet that slowly soared through the air and then made it's way through his chest. His scream, her cries, the empty look in his eyes when his back met with the cold floor, and the nauseating smell of blood.
''Do something,'' She sniffled from behind me. ''Oh, God!''
I turned to look at her. She had not stopped crying, but she wasn't crying as heavily as she was before. Two pairs of brown eyes followed the gun as it was dropped to the floor. Her eyes shot up, the loud bang pulling her out of the crying phase.
Breathing heavily, she moved closer to me, the look of fear in her eyes growing with each step she took. ''Do something!'' She heaved in a breath, her small hands grabbing my shirt. ''Do something!''
But I was far away. Much too far away to understand that the scene in front of me was real, and not taken out of a movie. The blood, his lifeless pale body, the uncomfortable silence that had fallen over us. It wasn't real. It couldn't possibly be real.
The sharp sound of sirens filled my ears. Some neighbor must have heard the gun.
She was still holding on to my shirt, whispering something into my chest. Why didn't she run? Why didn't she save herself while she still had time? It was just a matter of minutes before the house would be filled by policemen. Policemen that wanted to know what had happened. Policemen that would take her away.
The image of Selena with her arms behind her back, being pushed into a car against her will flashed before my eyes.
''Nick, what did we do?''
Her words confused me. I was innocent. If I had pulled that trigger, why was I not running? Shouldn't I be escaping, or at least trying my best to get away?
Her small voice whispered into my chest once again, ''Nick, is he dead?''
My arms were suddenly securely holding her, and my head was resting against hers, her sweet scent filling my nostrils. ''I don't know,'' I whispered back, as Selena pulled away for a bit.
A soft hand reached for my cheek, and in less than a second, her plump lips met mine. I never wanted to pull back, I would've made that kiss last forever if I could, but a harsh knock on the door broke our kiss, and I felt my heart stop.
''I didn't do anything, I didn't do anything,'' she sobbed into my chest, her mascara leaving black messy stains on my white t-shirt.
My eyes fell down on my brother, laying face down in a puddle of his own blood. There was no way she could have done something like this. ''I know you didn't. It'll all be fine, trust me.''
I held her tightly, stroking her hair while we cried together. Where had everything gone wrong?
. . .
"Nick Jonas, you are under arrest for the murder of Joe Jonas,'' the man across the table said, pulling his chair back before he stood up. ''You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
. . .
