Oh, dearie dear...there's nothing wrong with self-interest, but what you seem to be disregarding is the existence of MORALS. If a song is performed instrumentally, yes, it is acceptable because it still comes from the song as a whole, with lyrics. And who are you to say that an artist's work is nobody's business? It seems to me that Webber writes so much for commercial success, as opposed to upholding artistic scruples, that he's all about doing it for others, and not himself.

And frankly, I don't care if he's on death row for murdering a family of infants, none of that is any kind of argument for what kind of rights he retains for his own works of art.
By the way, I agree with you complete -- the world does need more people like me, who recognize that rational self-interest is a virtue rather than an evil, and that what an artist does with his own work is nobody's @#$% business but his own.

To recognize that the original song is a conglomerate art work is not the same as being unable to dichotomize between the music and the song. Instrumental versions of anything from rock music to Mozart would be an artistic abomination were that the case. They are accepted though even when they aren't brought about by the ARTISTS THAT COMPOSED THE MUSIC. It's becoming apparent that you just don't like Webber as a person, but your personal opinion of him is irrelevant to his artistic choices.

He has every place reusing his music however he likes. There was no surrender of his artistic rights to his own work in that collaboration.

See, there are also talented composers out there, Schwartz, Sondheim, etc. who do BOTH these things together! What a concept. And WHY they do this? BECAUSE THEY'RE WRITING A SONG! A SONG, WHICH IS COMPRISED OF MUSIC AND LYRIC IN TANDEM. They don't write the words and music separately because they have to work together for the song to be effective.
Great! Did he also sing "midnight" during this tv special? If so, any chance of uploading some day?...thanks for sharing.
