Drought is devastating the tiny nation of Lesotho where half a million people are facing starvation.

Many are being forced to trek many kilometres to try and find drinking water.

  • THINGS HAVE CHANGED SINCE THEN AND IT HAS BEEN 3 YRS SICE THAT REPORT AND ALOT HAS CHANGED.

  • we are studying "development" politics in college, and you are dead right, neoliberal market driven policies cause untold misery for the worlds poorer countries, the world bank and the imf give unpayable loans out then extract the wealth from the indebted countries, its deliberate and inhuman, the worlds richest nations in conjunction with often corrupt governments dictate these policies, and enrich themselves from the further impoverishment of the very poorest, who have no voices

  • the most important sentence in this story was "high prices of imported maize in the local market, have pushed the prices beyond the reach of many in Lesotho"

this imported grain is the problem, it messes up the local economy by not allowing it to grow. therefore, people are starving because of the poor economy, and the only thing feeding them is food aid. Ironicly, if food aid were not there, there might be a better local economy and therefore less starving people. THIS IS A BAD SYSTEM!
