Grand Theft Auto IV Ballad Of Gay Tony Demo - 1st Mission Review

Watching the game at a recent Rockstar demo, the first mission I see, titled "Dropping In," has Luis doing a favor for Bulgarin (the Russian gangster that Niko crosses in GTA4). Bulgarin is in the process of buying the Liberty City Rampage (the local hockey team), but can't close the deal. So, Luis is tasked with convincing the owner to take the offer. If this were either GTA4 or Lost and Damned, I'd expect you to drive up to the location and utilize your special negotiation technique. Not so; the way you arrive at your target's location is via parachute. Like in Lost and Damned, Rockstar North has made improvements to the engine, and the interior locale with a fire alarm, sprinklers, and lights runs at a smoother framerate than regular GTA4.
You land on the roof and work your way down to the penthouse office shooting fools all the while. And instead of weilding something like Niko's Uzi or Johnny's sawed-off shotgun, Luis rolls into the mission with a P90 -- an extremely expanded ergonomic assault rifle from Belgium of all places. Other hardware that Luis can brandish include the M249 SAW and AA-12 automatic shotgun. Even the mission's ending is a bit crazier and over-the-top than in previous games; instead of merely driving away and avoiding the police, Luis base-jumps out the window of the high-rise he's in and lands safely on a friendly truck.
At the mission's conclusion, you get a score based on a variety of factors (time, opponents taken out, objectives, etc). This is an extension of a mechanic found in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and players can easily restart a mission in order to improve their score on the leaderboards (and also for Achievement points). Rockstar then queues up a mission ("Going Deep") for me to play; it's a bit less extravagant than the "parachute in, kill a dude, then parachute out" setup of the previous mission, but it's still a crazy, action-filled shootout. This time, Luis is setting a trap on some corrupt Feds in a parking garage -- the suggested way to do this mission is to plant a whole bunch of remote charges around the parked cars, and wait. When the Feds roll in, you unleash the potent combination of multiple explosives and high-end firearms. If anything, the hardware in this installment will make for extremely fun Rampages.
