As a Canadian we find the way the Americans go about things perplexing too. I imagine the answer has something to do with the concentration of wealth and the desire of some people to choose a camp that they think will look after them, more so than seeking truth in the media.

As an American, I enjoyed your assessment of our television culture, most of the American intellectual sphere completely agrees with you, and that is why you see such immense reactions in the American internet domain. The internet seems to answer your wish for a more discourse driven society -

...you also offered the question "are the tv stations ignorant of themselves, or do they assume ignorance in their audience?" and I strongly assure you that it is the latter, in fact its a perpetual wheel of assuming the ignorance and eventually creating the ignorance. What we have in America is a caste-esque social division of information traffic, where different social groups go to different sources, its very complex, im sure you know!

you should check out cultural theorist--Stuart Hall if you haven't already. he also talks about representation and the media. =)

Oh hell yeah, you're absolutely right! Getting all your news from one source is idiotic. I have always been critical of the polarization of American society, and the so-called debates on news shows. I like Al-Jazeerah because they employ everyone from Baathists to liberals to Islamists to report the news and make an effort to remain somewhat neutral.

Wow you are very cultured, I admire that. :]

gr8 talk...more ppl have to follow the journalistic view of collecting info from various sources, considering the source and seek 1st hand accounts from all sides...peace
intresting alex, it seems that it is becoming more and more the job of artist to be more vocal and critical of the media. the media is not looking very self critical these days.

Artists/ individuals are well equipped for critical debate - the corporate sector is not.

Your right about the separation of Liberal or conservative. And I do agree with the 'audience is stupid' idea that seems to control our networks. I watch several news channels, and often find myself angry with the TV because their asking questions I know the answer to with heavy bias, and twisting the truth. Where do you get Mid-East news?

google: "Aljazeera English" - it costs $6 per month to stream live to your computer 24/7.

I forget what its called since it was pulled offline & put on Mil intranet, OCC or some such, but it works hand in hand with FEMA controlling the news & marketable exposure to citizens thus citizen opinion. It runs on a set of rules & laws also known as the Disinformation Act. An Easy & Very effective tool! You see, Media has been spying on & targeting our habbits for decades so they know their pidgeons well & can predict & steer trends in all avenues.

I have no doubts about the institution of the media panopticons of modern governments.
It's one thing to have free speech on paper and quite another to allow it to be practiced by the masses.
