Indianapolis Colts Quarterbacks since 1984

John Elway (QB) Stanford 1983 1st overall (long story)

In the 1983 NFL Draft, Elway was selected as the first overall pick by the Baltimore Colts. Elway had, by then, played two summers of minor league baseball for the New York Yankees organization. Additionally, Elway had publicly stated that he refused to join the Colts organization, feeling the team could not allow him to be successful. If they did not trade him he said he was going to play baseball. Eventually, Colts owner Robert Irsay gave in. The Colts traded him to the Denver Broncos for QB Mark Herrmann, rights to OL Chris Hinton and a first-round pick (OG Ron Solt) in the 1984 NFL Draft on May 2, 1983. The Elway controversy became more interesting when Elway's Broncos visited Baltimore during the season. The Colts took a 19-0 lead only to blow it and lose 21-19. After the strike shortened season of 1982 the Colts were 0-9-1 assuring them the first pick. In 1983, they finished 7-9 with Mike Pagel as Quarterback. The Colts played in the government owned Memorial Staduim which it was antiquated and their lease was up after the 1983 season. Maryland legislatures threatened to cease the Colts by eminent domain, promting the midnight move with Phoenix, AZ with drawing their bid as a relocation site. On March 29, 1984, the Mayflower trucks containing the property of the Colts arrived in Indianpolis from Baltimore.
