SONAR 8 - HOW TO CREATE SONGS FROM START TO FINISH

This tutorial is for all comers, new and experienced. I'm an advocate for Sonar, because it is extremely user friendly and you can get everything you need done in one program. Cakewalk support is great as well. Also the Sonar forum is pretty good if you ever get caught in a bind.

The main purpose is to take you through the steps of completing an entire song. If you're in the market for a new DAW and you're considering Sonar, then take a look at this series and it will help you get started.

I am by no means a professional or a teacher, but I figured that I do have something to add since I've been on Sonar for about 3 years. I'm also a pretty good producer, songwriter, and singer. I hope you enjoy.

  • Yo man - nice videos. I got two questions, both of which probably make me sound dumb...but i figure it's worth asking. A) I got a 2 input USB audio interface (Mackie Blackjack Onyx) that I'm using as the main interface for Sonar. My only problem is that I can't play MIDI sounds through the interface (and the monitors that are plugged into the interface), I'm using an M-Audio MIDI keyboard (also USB) to play plug-ins...B) When I do get sounds...they're delayed. Is that relative to latency issues?

  • @goulet22 The sound delay may be due to latency. Hard to say. Without seeing what type of hardware you have or being familiar with it, I can't really help there. I would try tech support.

  • @maskerade45 how is your MIDI gear setup?

  • @goulet22 Just a midi keyboard into my interface, interface to my computer.

  • Hello! I'm a cakewalk beginner using Sonar 8. I'm having problems with recording playback (no sound on playback). I'm using a Mxl 2001 condenser mike connected to cakewalk through an interphase ( M-Audio,fast track pro -set to phantom power). What do i need to do to ensure recording and playback. Thanks!!

  • @jazzy2465 Not sure how to help you there. I would to cakewalk forums and see if others are having the same technical issue.

  • you should use a hypercam instead of an actual video camera.

But whatever. Lol I greatly appreciate the hard work you put into this. This really helps THANKS :)

  • I appreciate the videos posted. However, they are not really that helpful for someone who is new to Sonar. I was not able to follow you because, I do not have those loops, nor do I know where to get them.

  • you had me for like 2 minutes and then lost me at the loops

  • @goulet22 If anyone else is wondering, you need asio4all drivrs and with m-audio firewire equipment you need a firewire card with texas instruments chipset. I had the same problem as this guy.

  • GOOD SHYT BRO!!! my computer audio is not playing through my M audio monitor..my monitors only play audio if im using the sonar ... my question is it my soundcard or just the way i got it hooked up? got any tips...im using hp windows 7.

  • Starting off with loops is kinda wack...need to learn how to create from scratch. Good instruction however.

  • Where did you download the alternative loops?

  • Podrias subir un video, traducido en español por favor? gracias

  • Please forgive the totally ignorant amongst us, such as me, but I simply want something to download to my laptop to play some simple bits and pieces for short trailers I am putting together for my book. Is the Sonar the best means to do this and can I record these music files to my laptop for use on my windows movies?

  • When you get a chance can you either tell me exactly where to go to find the exact info or tell me how to setup my SY 77 Yamaha sequencer as a SLAVE to Sonar ( I have Home Studio 6 ). I want to record 1 track from the keyboard. Then the 2nd track to sync with the 1st and so forth. I don't know the settings and tech support told me they can't help because they don't know about that keyboard. When I hit start on Sonar I want the keyboard to start. Thank you so much..

  • @jazzy2465 Check to make sure that you're using the correct drivers. go to the preference option (I think). I had the same problem with my lexicon lambda.
