This video may prove that motorcycles are safer than cars. Despite appearing not to notice the impact, this driver in this collision made a medical Insurance claim. The day after the collision, he and his five passengers reported they were all suffering from neck and back pain. Although the driver did not give any statements to the insurance company, he hired a 1-800 attorney. The 1-800 attorney specializes in getting settlements from insurance companies. There was no damage to me or my motorcycle, which weighs 1/8th the weight of his 4000lb mini van. So, in this one case motorcycles are much safer than minivans. This video shows how a few bad decisions on a motorcycle can result in a collision. I learned three things from this experience. Lesson #1: Keep your mouth shut if you do some thing stupid. Admitting guilt will get you in trouble. Lesson #2, stay out of the right lane. This accident would not have happened if I was in the left lane and shared the lane. Lesson #3, Don't hit any vehicle with people in it. Lesson #4. Take pictures of all the occupants, so you can catch the other party if the numbers change after the accident.

  • How is a motorcycle safer then a minivan? If you got smoked by some idiot going through a red-light or stop sign on a motorcycle you would be killed or vey seriously injured. In a van depending on if you have seatbelt on you wouldn't have as many injuries. This accident was also your fault. Shouldn't be weaving around traffic like that. Is this Detroit? If so I live in Windsor across the river.

  • @CPWindsorsub Thanks for the comment. This was Baltimore, MD. I guess if I got t-boned I would have had some damage to the bike. But, I had no damage or injuries and this nut claimed 6 people were injured in the van. This stupid claim is still open. My insurance company did not raise my rates yet, and I have since made 30 safe commutes on the same bike. But, I don't try the weaving method unless I am doing parking lot drills with cones.

  • I agree with this cliche. Also, the space between my ears gets me in the most trouble. But, this cliche doesn't really fit. I had no damage or injuries. The other party in the 4000 lb minivan is claiming injuries. And, as experience, I have ridden less than a year. I didn't realize I was heading for trouble when I got on the bike, but I did notice many of the trouble spots when I reviewed the video. This was a learning experience. Now, I don't ride when tired or impatient.

  • Looked like the driver would not have known if the rider hadn't told him.

  • @fryloc359 The good news is he does not know there is a video. And, of 1/30/2012 this is not closed, so as time goes on the hole gets bigger for the other guy.

  • Asshole trying to make his money the old-fashioned way...............................sue somebody for it. It would serve the scum-bag right if he got hit by a train next time.

  • @crw1959 Thanks for your support.

  • @ipmasqman Ah. They could have claimed injures just for the insurance money.

  • This accident is 100% your fault! You should have stayed in the left lane until you had a clear opening to merge back in....Instead, you decide to weave around everyone and everything. 100% your fault.

  • @glassmakerx Oh, and I totally agree with you and the other posters about the scumbag in the van you clipped. Although it is unlikely, it would be great if the insurance companies use your video to nail him for fraud.

Stay safe, my friend. Your Beemer is a great bike. (I have an R1100RT myself, as well as a Honda VFR800.)

  • @ipmasqman The quote is not really a cliche as much as a statement of fact. Fortunately, your reply shows that you did learn something from this. That may help keep you safe in the future. Although you were the one who obviously screwed up here by riding too fast for traffic conditions (especially in the parking garage) and trying to scoot around cars when you shouldn't, just keep in mind that it doesn't matter who has the right of way if you're in a hospital bed - or the morgue.

  • Watching this video brings a motorcycling quote to mind:

"Motorcycling is not, of itself, inherently dangerous.

It is however, extremely unforgiving of inattention, ignorance, incompetence, or stupidity!"

I'm curious how long you've been riding. It was pretty obvious you were headed for trouble before you even left the parking garage...

  • That's perfect that he doesn't know there is a video. Let him make a full claim and then have the insurance companies go after him for insurance fraud! According to physics there is no way that the car would have moved so he could not have gotten whiplash if the vehicle didn't even move. Let him hang himself!
