Pebble Beach [or Chris Gardian and A Smashing 2011 for Toronto Police, 14 Division]

Friday, is the one year anniversary of a beating received by Chris Gardian from 14 Division officers who admitted they had hit him when they delivered him to St. Michael's Hopsital. Chris was dead six days later, Feb. 2, 2011. Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) refused to investigate.

Given the tight relationship between police and coroner, it's not totally clear. Initial report places blame on mix of alcohol and drugs adminstered in prison (which kept him sedated for almost all of four days). Even in that case, police beating responsible. He wouldn't have been on medical range at Don Jail if not for the beating. Still, SIU said that initial coroner's report enough to mean no investigation.
