One of our 'surprises' on our March Break trip to Costa Rica was getting to see a rare bird called the Quetzal ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resplendent_Quetzal ), which is one the most beautiful bird in the Western hemisphere.

There are two subspecies of Resplendent Quetzal , P. m. mocinno and P. m. costaricensis, the Costa Rican Resplendent Quetzal.

  • My favorite bird!

I have a picture of one of these guys hanging on my wall. Cutest, fuzziest little heads ever.

  • I agree! They are so adorable. :D

  • u R so lucky

  • I know! :D

  • You may consider yourself lucky. Hundreds of people come to the R. Dairy Rivera quetzal national park in Guatemala, and never see a Quetzal.

  • Wow, really? That is so amazing! I didn't know they were that rare.

Mine too! They really are that cute.

  • I seen two quetzals a male and female. I live in the u.s. But I travel every year to central Mexico to the state of Guanajuato. This was in December. I saw a man with a pair of beautiful birds with the long tail! I new right away that they were quetzal's. I even asked the man who looked of guatemalan origin if they where quetzal. He said yes I asked how much and he said 300each or 500 for both. I felt bad for the birds and I am against buying rare animals illegally! They should be protected!!
