DREAMS AND REALITIES OF 1973 CHILE AWAKENED IN "LEFT"
Through the Eyes of North American "Gringos," Zoé Dance Tackles South American Theme with Compassion and Surrealism

Cambridge (MA) -- Zoé Dance presents "LEFT," inspired by the disturbing events that surround the 1973 coup d'état in Chile, Fri-Sun September 9, 10,and 11, 2011 at the Dance Complex (536 Mass. Ave., Cambridge, MA).

In little under an hour, Choreographer Callie Chapman Korn, intrigued by the not so distant past of a foreign society, creates a visual recollection on movement, emotions, memories, pain and resurrections of the soul with the surreal theatrical performance "LEFT". Eight dancers/performers, who metaphorically are caterpillars just becoming butterflies, end their journey eaten by the spider. Despite their love and camaraderie for each other, the characters cannot stop the superior material powers which decide their destiny. The historical spider in this case is the coalition of Chilean military powers, right wing Chilean economic groups and the CIA orchestrating a "coup d'état" set in the 1970's. Ms. Chapman Korn, being an outsider to the society and the time period of the conflict, aims to creates dance movement which portrays the emotions lived by the victims of history.

This spectrum of the human condition in "LEFT" is seen with North American (a.k.a. "gringa") eyes. Looking at the past (while also being married to a Chilean) without a direct personal history with the country's dictatorship, Callie Chapman Korn (choreographer) can step back a bit further to see these events through what is reported through the media, internet, art, and of course conversations, stories, and personal relations with and stories from those affected. Through "LEFT", Chapman hopes to awaken unaware North American viewers of a cross-cultural historically repeating cycle of unnecessary violence against humanity for sake of economic power so that it has less of a chance of repeating itself in any form. The Sunday performance of "LEFT" will take place on the 38th anniversary of the coup (Sept. 11, 1973).
