Ambrose Bierce enlisted to fight during the Civil War. He survived many battles and rose to the rank of Brevet Major. After the war he became a writer and newspaper reporter. Bierce went to San Francisco and became a famous and controversial reporter. He went to Mexico during the Mexican-American war to find Pancho Via. He never returned, and no one knows what actually happened to him. His real life almost sounds like one of his stories!
Bierce's stories of the war are both famous and infamous. Many people said that he was crazy, and like Poe and many writers of the time, he may have been. His ventures into writing have resulted in some of the best horror stories of the time, always with a twist and always well-crafted.
