[YouTube is allowing videos longer than 15 minutes now which is why I'm uploading this video again, but it's in one piece this time.]

Are schools designed to help people learn? Are colleges and universities really institutions of higher education? Do students actually learn any science in science classes? Can skateboarding give us a better model for teaching and learning? Watch this video to find out.

  • Hey Dr Tae, Im a senior in highschool this year. Iv been skating for 4 years and have always liked science. I took physics this last year and it was by far my favorite class iv ever taken. I really want to become a teacher in the long run. This video is huge motivation for me and in years from now if i ever end up being a highschool physics teacher on the first day of school im going to show my class this video

  • I've had the same experience. All through high-school I loved science, but didn't do well because I didn't believe in memorizing stuff, when the main problem is understanding the processes. Somehow I made it to medical school: the same thing. Somehow I got to be a pathologist... things changed. Now I have a private lab, and I do all sorts of experiments and weird, after I get my job done. My team and I have managed to develop a cell fixative solution and tons of products.

  • ...forever to teach just a little bit, but then again maybe they'd enjoy it more and look things up in their free time. Perhaps a bigger problem is that we're preparing these kids to become one thing--a civil engineer, a vet, a nurse, a businessman, a chemist, etc. I think life is about more than being a job title. I think we really need to be teaching them how to learn and how fun discovering new things is, so we don't have to teach, they will teach themselves. But anyways, great video and idea

  • Is it safe to say our culture and our teaching system is completely backwards? Speaking to "how we learn" and the skateboarding bit: It seems your method would take a long time, right? Longer than we give kids. So how do we accomplish this? Obviously the whole thing needs to change. We do not give enough time but also there is so much to learn. It's not just science, there are other subjects and there just isn't enough time if kids take "58 attempts" right? Seems it would take forever...

  • Watched that part about memorizing the slide from the high school biology class.

Students are treated more like robots. Expected to input and memorize data in a very mechanical way. There is nothing else to the experience other than inputting data like a machine. This offers nothing to a human being and turns kids off to learning.

  • Awesome ! I like your approach :)
