Just a typical norm, that was the genius of the WW...always amazing.

@davidwalmsley I never saw it that way. Earlier in the episode, as I recall, Leo privately declared, unabashedly, that he loves Bartlett. This scene is an acknowledgement that the affection is returned. And yeah, after a hard day, it means a lot.

I`m a British person who has been intersted in recent US history and the Presidency for all of my adult life. The West Wing was indeed a shinig beacon of excellance in terms of writing and drama personified. Bartlett was the best president the Untied States never had. When John Spencer died, I was really saddened, not only in temrs of the fact that we lost Leo as a character, but I feel the character of John Spencer was pretty much interwoven with his fictional character.. I miss this show!

You got a best friend? Is he smarter than you? Would you trust him with your life? That's your chief of staff.
Of course, it also helps if your chief of staff is someone you trust enough to say, "Hold on a minute, Jed (or Barack, or George, or Bill -- not 'Mr. President' and can get away with it), that's not going to work." And you yell Why? And he can come back with a reason without being frightened by the office. And when you say You got a better idea? He does. That was Leo.

@hanscombe72 Yeah, but you see that very human and vulnerable side every now and then. His face does this thing when he cried, it was like nothing I ever saw an actor do. It didn't look like an actor crying, a character crying. It looked like a real person. There are some incredible acting performances in this series, but John set the mark and nobody else could touch it.

@Jambon99 is there a video of this online?

beautiful

Wow I never looked at Leo that way. The last thing I ever would have considered McGarry being was fragile. His military service, his success in the private sector and his role as COS make him a giant, albeit a very human one.

John Spencer, man... what a frickin pro.

Leo, I suspect, cries at the end of a very, very difficult day because he is reminded of how thin the thread is by which all his sense of happiness and fulfilment hangs. It's not joy, it's the alcoholic's terror at how brittle the veneer is of their non-drinking life. It is heartbreaking to watch and beautifully acted by the late Mr Spencer.
-
I think it was pure emotion more than joy.
Anyway, outstanding John Spencer, what a performance.
-
Oh man, and then at the end of the series..... Whoa.
-
@PHANTOM1OF1OPERA ...have you never cried with joy?
-
guys why was leo crying? wasnt that a good thing?
if you listen to the DVD commentary for this episode John Spencer starts to choke up during this scene and says something to the effect of "this is the kind of writing an actor waits his whole career for". I couldn't agree more.

John Spencer's performance on the West Wing were a tour de force. His talent will be missed forever.
