This part is about the 'race' for "Tomorrow Never Dies" located on #13. The participants were among others Saint Etienne, Marc Almond and K.D. Lang but in the end Sheryl Crow finished.
JAMES BOND'S GREATEST HITS is an entertaining documentary produced by NORTH ONE for the british TV station "Channel 4" in late 2006. It's a countdown of 22 Bond's Greatest Hits determinated by a public vote to find UK's favourite Bond song.
In this documentary You will of course see Bond film clips and music videos. But that's not all! You'll also find out about backstage battles and controversies behind the songs, the rejected Bond themes and rarely seen performances or videos of the artists.
In my opinion the BEST documentary about Bond songs!
surrender has one of the best sounds of the bond tracks in my opinion

St Etienne had the best track I agree with Pierce Brosnan. KD Lang is over rated singer like so many over rated singers in the music industry.

Also,Lang sound to much like a diva and less like a femme fatale, like a woman who isn't strictly pulp fiction in that camp complacent sense: she's not sexually aggressive enough to be a bondgirl. There's no intent, no playing to the male in question:with Lang it's an a-typical performance for the band stand. A bond girl, all bond girls, have a sense of sentimental laceration from their exposure to mr. bond, because he's unflappable, unmatchable and uncatchable. He's the man that will kill them.

P.S.Crucial to any plausible diva is a sense of sensual sincerity: they have to pine, covet, conquer, pursue or mourn bond. Lang sounds more like she's turning out one for the club. It feels like its pushing for the band stand, poaching for ques from the drummer and brass mass than centering in on the sentimental intensity of the message. Also, another prevalent aspect of every bond girl is a sense of being scarred by association. Either by his neglect or his attention, they almost allendupdead.

K.D. Lang's voice is inarguably the Bond sound crystallized: the problem is, bond audience's aren't shelling out for just dusty chest nuts. The bond appeal is predicated on the constant, dynamic innovation of two elements, the sensual and the technical. Advances in the musical aesthetic were inevitable and should be embraced.

I Liked Sheryl Crow's rendition because it was very Subtle. Bond had used the BIG & Larger than Life thing so much & it had been done to death. So when I heard this dark & ambient song, with that macabre twist, I Liked it. It was a sofisticated arrangement. Which suited Bond. There's nice String Pulls in the right places, the Piano & Double Bass Sounds Lush, the Rhythm changes in the right places & it's a Bold move. All the Other Singers are bitter at loosing. Thats all. It's a Classy piece.

I think that Tomorrow Never Dies had the greatest number of GOOD song submissions, and as much as I like Swan Lee's, Sheryl Crow's, and Saint Etienne's, K. D. Lang's was the correct choice. The lyrics match the movie and the vocals are superb. I hate that the producers never seem to have the balls to pick the right choice anymore ("The World is Not Enough" being the ONLY exception since "Tomorrow Never Dies").
