I knew my compressor was bad when I started to smell a burning sulfurish, brake-pad/clutch odor, then popped my hood and saw the compressor clutch glowing red hot and throwing sparks from its guts, just before the accessory belt melted. But, it made no "rattling noise"...

The rattling sound from a noisy compressor could also come from it being loosely mounted to the engine. So check the tightness of the mounting bolts as well.
