iPhone 4 TomTom kit fix

A quick, very cheap, easy-to-undo and safe way of making the iPhone 4 work with the TomTom car kit / mount from the 3G/3GS.

All it takes is a tiny strip of foam rubber about 2mm thick and the iPhone 4 fits into the mount perfectly. If you don't add something like this, then the phone fits vertically, but it will not be charged as it is a little "thinner" and doesn't trip the power connection on the back of the base of the mount.

Are there any problems with the Bluetooth speakerphone with iPhone 4 on this? And I also heard with the iPhone 4 it uses the internal GPS antennae as opposed to the TomTom kit's external GPS. Is this true?

@motorztv BT speakerphone works OK. not sure about the internal / external GPS question, you'd have to ask TomTom. It seems to get a good signal for me anyway.

DasProblem ist aber garnicht die Decke / Dünne des iPhones, sondern dass der SteckerdesCarkits nicht weitgenug in das iPhone / den iPod passt. Dazu muss man links und rechts vom Stecker das Gehäuse des Carkits abschleifen. Das ist nur Plastik- das schafft jeder. Problem: Dann ist wahrscheinlich die Garantie weg. Wer das Ding seit dem3GS hat - wsl eh keine Garantie mehr drauf. Wer nur ne billige Lösung (20€ Amazon) für sein iPhone 4sucht -dran denken.Viel Spaß

Thanks for this tip. In our family we have both an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 3 GS. Can you still use the 3 GS after attaching the foam piece?

@andypiperuk I think there's a separate car kit app that you can install that will give you the answer. I ordered the kit for my iPhone4 so I'll find out as soon as I get it too. Thanks for the response! I'm glad the speakerphone works still... the GPS in the phone has been good enough for me so I'm less concerned about the external one working.

I just got the Tom Tom car kit and had to return it cause I could not get it to turn on now I have to go back and get it again thx for the video!!

I used the round foam 'polomint' insert that comes with a stack of 50 blank CDs. Great spot chap and well done. Saved me a trip to the Apple store :D

Nice, but why is it that every video on this fix is made on the iphone 4 so nobody can show the iphone 4 actually put into the Tom Tom? Doesn't anyone have an extra video camera?
