Thanks to youtube for extending time limits on videos, and to my friend Pedro for teaching me how to make my files smaller, I can now offer you Rachel Flowers playing ELP's Karn Evil 9 First Impression, meeting the Hammond C3 for the very frist time, complete from start to finish with no commercial breaks!

Don't mind the tchotchkes flying off the Leslie Speakers - that's part of the show ;)

This video was originally posted in two parts:

On December 12, 2010 Rachel participated in a flute workshop that was held in a home that might rightly be called Keyboard Central. Following the recital, potluck, and sight reading session, our hosts took Rachel on a grand tour to meet the various keyboards lurking throughout the house, which Rachel had a fantastic time trying out. As we were leaving she was asked to play this number in order to give the C3 a good workout, and she happily obliged.

I was going to apologize for the amateurish camera work, and other imperfections in this video, but looking at it now, I don't apologize for anything. The joy of the music transcends the imperfections. So please crank up the volume and enjoy with us Rachel's first meeting with a Hammond C3 - complete with breaking glass (vibrated off of the Leslie cabinet), impromptu audience participation, and bad lighting. This video is what it is, and that's a wonderful thing. I'm just glad I was able to capture the moment. jf

p.s. Everyone is invited to sing along!!

  • The best, and most meager, thing I can say in response to this amazing video, is that I am more in awe than ever before of Keith Emerson's brilliant musicianship, all thanks to the awe-inspiring Rachel Flowers, whose performance strips away all the usual, boring R&R histrionics and allows us to hear, with fresh ears, this remarkable music. God bless you, Rachel!
