  • not a bad CAT for the size it is. I drive a Kenworth daycab pulling a tanker with this engine and it's around 445hp and it pulls pretty good through the VA hills on the interstates. about 35psi turbo and it sounds good when she whistles. i think these engines are a great in the middle for someone who wants a light engine and some decent power

  • @yamahonkawazuki ...all through the 80´s,Diesel in cars lingerd around a few % market share but as soon as (by the end 80´s) turbos came into play and than common rail and Diesel started to be fun,the Japanese (who had a horrible reputation for Diesel engines regarding power and reliability),were building "over night" fully compatative Diesel engines in cars and light duty trucks...Tundras are just the beginning and if the US industry doesn´t watch it..Dinos will go extingt...

  • @yamahonkawazuki Toyota doesn´t seem to be "the answer" to all problems anymore anyways...those recalls that they had (and for what reasons!) shows,just how much they push down on their quality.

    One lesson can (and should be) learned from them regardless:Diesel in lighter vans and trucks (VW Transporter or FIAT Duacto) wich are very important in the European business market,were neglected by the Japanese,who were looking towards the US and therefor putting gas engines first.....

  • @00G000 if toyota would build a super duty or severe duty truck, id get one. but htey dont. their current truck wont work. well not for my needs anyways. that aside yeah european emission laws are quite strict. even so its a pain in the arse to import a euro spec vehicle into the states.. not counting domestic produced euro cars. talking about vehicels that exist there. but not here

  • @amusichound ...homologue the bigger 3 liter instead of the 2 liter,even though the 3 liter is an overkill for the smaller X3 and makes less sense.Reason is,that the Gov´t tries to keep out foreign Diesel as much as possible cause otherwise your whole industry would be a wash,you simply overslept thirty years of Diesel engine development.

    If I could choose between a may be 20 mpg gas truck and a 45 mpg (foreign) Diesel Truck ( I am talking 1/2 ton here),what would I choose to by?what would you?

  • @amusichound ..because I see just how good those systems work in their line up (and multiple ones just like them).I drove an MAN 19.310,build in 88´,equipped with a three axle ABS for instance.

    Another thing is,that Vovos come with Cummins and CAT engines and that is a little confusing,isn´t it?

    Reason is,that foreign Disel engines are very expensive to homologue on the American market:when BMW introduced it´s Diesel for the X3/X5,they had to .....

  • @amusichound have been ignored.When I was talking about common rail II systems (multi jet) I was talking about the fact,that a Diesel that injects it´s MAIN-portion of fuel over several (pilot-main 1-main 2-after injection) will burn it´s fuel way cleaner,causing far less problems with Diesel particle filter systems....Cummins and even more CAT ignored this trend until federal regulations overrun them...sad but true.

    Why I go off on someone saying how "crappy" European manufacturer are?....

  • @amusichound Ok,lets talk basics now:Do American manufacturer produce working Diesel engines?Yes,they did and they made good money doing so.I don´t deny that fact.So,where did they go wrong?simple,after years of successful business and blinders,set to a narrow gap that just included the States,they fell behind in technological development.How I can say?Well,the whole emission situation has caused a lot of problems to them and the reason is,that important engine management developments....
