The first half of the footage are home movies taken at Dolphins Family Day 1983 at old Biscayne College of rookie QB Dan Marino. The second half is a news report several nights later about the quarterback competition in training camp and expectations for QB David Woodley coming off of Miami's Super Bowl XVII loss.

  • Jiltedin2007 - Riggins didn't rush for 276 yds....try 166.

  • @mcgurkryans. The beginning of the end really started in the playoff game in 1981 against the Chargers. He just had a bad game. Then Strock came in and had a great game but he couldn't handle starting responsibilities. So, Shula watched David like a hawk even when he had a great playoff run in 1982 with his legs. Ideally, had Bob Griese not injured his shoulder in 1980 and retired, he would have been the starting QB with Strock finishing off, and Woodley running Shula's version of the wildcat.

  • @MrGb4ever The Redskins did make some adjustments at halftime during Super Bowl XVII. But to be honest with you I never really thought of David Woodley as a Money Type of Quarterback. Going into the second half with a lead. Why didn't he build on it? Sure, we agreed that the Redskins "Hog" Defense had Woodley stifled, but Good Quarterbacks usually have that knack to neutralize that. And after John Riggins' 4th Down run into the End Zone, something had to be called to maintain momentum.

  • @Jiltedin2007 Yup, I agree with you about the niners but as far as Marino making a difference that`s hard to say. I will say however Dan would have given them a better chance to win because he was a far better QB than Dave. But in that 2nd half the Skins were waiting back there so I don`t know if Dan would have made a difference. To top it off, everyone of Dave`s passes were at least 30 yards. No Screens and no draws and the 1st TD for the Phins was a short pass to Cefalo.

  • @MrGb4ever And in Super Bowl XIX, the 49ers dealt an even bigger blow to the Dolphins than the Redskins did, with Joe Montana the MVP of that Super Bowl. It was a case of Montana outdueling Dan Marino in San Jose on that Super Bowl Sunday. But let me ask you this. During the Super Bowl the Redskins won, Marino was a Senior at Pittsburgh. Had Marino would have played for the Dolphins during Super Bowl XVII, do you think that Marino could have changed the course of that game?

  • @Jiltedin2007 No, the defense couldn`t stop him and to make matters worse the Phins got totally away from their offensive game plan that worked so affectively in the 1st half. That`s why it upsets me that Woodley got blamed for this. For the most part, that same defense played the 49ers a couple of years later and couldn`t stop them either and Dan Marino was the QB.

  • @MrGb4ever I know. You don't have to tell me about the Dolphins Defense the way John Riggins was running up and down the Rose Bowl, especially on that clutch 4th Down play where "The Diesel" ran 43 yards for a Touchdown to put the Redskins up for good. The one thing I will never forget about that play was seeing a Dolphin actually grabbing a hold of Riggins' jersey as he was breaking away.

Considering that Riggins rushed for a Super Bowl Record 276 yards, there was no one who could stop him

  • @Jiltedin2007 Dolphins play calling in the second half and the defense`s inability to stop John Riggins or their passing game.

  • @MrGb4ever So who do you fault for the Dolphins losing Super Bowl XVII?

  • @Jiltedin2007 Yeah, he went 0 for 8 in the second half but who was calling the plays? ...Don Shula or the offensive coordnator! That`s who! ...Guess how many of those passes were short ones? None of them! Everyone of those pass plays in the second half were set up for failure. So maybe David didn`t make all the right decisions but he certainly wasn`t put in the best place to win either. It`s ashame and he didn`t deserve all the blame for that loss.
