Not long after unification the Kingdom of Italy began a series of expansions, starting with Eritrea and Italian Somalia. After a war with the Ottoman Empire the Italians gained Libya and the Dodecanese islands. Italy also gained a concession in Tientsin, China. After the consolidation of power of the fascist Mussolini national expansion greatly increased with the aim of creating a new Roman Empire that would dominate the Mediterranean. Ethiopia was conquered, Albania was incorporated into Italy and during World War II the Italians gained French Savoy, Corsica, Tunisia, Djibouti, British Somaliland and parts of the Balkans before the war ended in disaster.
