How to Play Easy Songs on the Guitar for Beginners
Hundreds of songs use only two or three chords. This makes it easy for a beginner on the guitar to play songs in a relatively short period of time. The most efficient method is to learn a few basic chords with the left hand and a few basic strumming patterns with the right hand. Once this is achieved, you are ready to start learning songs.
Although the guitar often feels awkward and uncomfortable at first, practicing and playing songs makes the guitar feel more natural.
1. Tune the guitar to standard tuning. Standard tuning for the guitar, going from the sixth string to the first string, is E-A-D-G-B-E. The sixth string is the thickest string and the first string is the thinnest.
2. Practice strumming exercises with the right hand. Hold the guitar pick between your thumb and index finger and practice the following patterns with a metronome. Set the metronome at a slow speed. Strum downward on the strings four times as the metronome clicks one-two-three-four. Alternate down and up strums: one (down)-two (up)-three (down)-four (up).
3. Learn basic guitar chords in the first position on the guitar.
4. Play songs with two chords.
5. Play songs with three chords.
