Bio: District 97 is the only Progressive Rock band in the world to feature an American Idol finalist and a Chicago Symphony Orchestra virtuoso cellist.

The band was formed in the Fall of 2006 by drummer Jonathan Schang, keyboardist Rob Clearfield, bassist Patrick Mulcahy and guitarist Sam Krahn. The foursome from Chicago honed a no-holds barred style of Liquid Tension Experiment inspired Instrumental Rock before deciding the right vocalist was needed to complement their sound; enter 2007 American Idol Top 10 Female Finalist, Leslie Hunt. With a look, sound and stage presence comparable to a young Ann Wilson from Heart, Leslie's dynamic performances pushed the band into a new direction that forged a unique marriage between accessible, catchy vocal melodies and an adventurous instrumental prowess.
After attending a show and being highly impressed, Katinka Kleijn, cellist extraordinaire from the world-renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra, joined the band. She was followed shortly thereafter by one of Chicago's finest young guitarists, Jim Tashjian. With this new lineup of peerless musicianship in place, District 97 began wowing crowds and establishing a devoted fanbase through packed shows at legendary Chicago venues such as House of Blues, Schubas and Martyrs'.

In May 2010, the band signed with Laser's Edge Records, the foremost home of new Progressive music. Laser's Edge will oversee a worldwide physical and digital release of District 97's debut effort, Hybrid Child, in September 2010,. Recorded with two of Chicago's best engineers, Manny Sanchez and Chris Harden (Billy Corgan, Fall Out Boy, Umphrey's McGee etc.), the album balances a meticulous attention to detail and studio-craft with the visceral power of a rock band that is firing on all cylinders. Running the gamut from Meshuggah-inspired metal, the epic majesty of Yes, and the melodicism of the Beatles, Hybrid Child unveils District 97 as a true force to be reckoned with, and one that is poised to take the music world by storm. With fans ranging from high school students to world-class musicians, this process is clearly well underway.

  • When are you coming to NJ????!!!

  • @cmccabe07921 We'll be in that neck of the woods for ROSfest om May 22nd, 2011 in Gettysburg, PA.

  • Friend of mine, a drummer, told me - you like Allan Holdsworth, you like Bill Bruford, you gotta check this band out. After a few days of trying to remember if he said "District" or "Zone" or "97" or "79" I finally remembered. Fuggin Hell this is the bomb, I love this video, so catchy, so intelligently done and the i love the video effects - it both underscores the message of music over image while simultaneously providing a stunning image. I love this band, and the vocalist is a star!

  • @cmccabe07921 Hey thanks! Check out our CD "Hybrid Child", there's plenty more where this came from :-) It's on Amazon, iTunes, lasercd.com, and is getting a great reception. We also have a whole show up for download on our Bandcamp site, with the chance to get some cool gifts if you make a donation to our next recording project when you download. Thanks for listening!

  • Wow! Shit. These guys are amazing. I can't believe I could have seen them at Calprog, but due to a series of unfortunate events, I had to pass it up. Wow. This is really well done and ORIGINAL prog rock. Not too symphonic. Not too RIO. Just right. I love Yes, Genesis, and the classics, but I'm tired of bands that sound like that and ape riffs from 70s prog. This stuff is pretty unique and original. Well done!

  • @SteveAlbinisPussy Dude, you're awesome. Thanks for listening. No sweat about missing CalProg, the WHOLE show will be up for download Monday 12/6 from our Bandcamp site. Also, be sure to pick up Hybrid Child from Amazon, itunes, Laser's Edge etc., I think it's safe to say you'l like it :-)

  • Ok not bad but (a) the chorus sucks and (b) the guitar in sync with the lyrics on the high notes is cheesy.

  • SHE IS BEAUTIFULL!!!!

  • First I thought, UK "In the Dead of Night" rip off, but the song branched out into some interesting sections, especially the cello part. So I'll check out more.

  • PROG FTW!

Finally a young, energetic band making some true fucking Prog! The world suddenly doesn't suck half as much!

  • sounds like a mix of Umphrey's McGee, Rush, and Bach... well done guys!
