US & Israel Vote against UN Res. Condemning Terrorism

On Dec 7th, 1987, 153 UN member states unanimously endorsed Res. 42/159 condemning Terrorism.

Except, only 2 countries voted against it!

The United States & Israel.

Why?

Paragraph 14:

"14. Considers that nothing in the present resolution could in any way prejudice the right to self-determination, freedom and independence, as derived from the Charter of the United Nations, of peoples forcibly deprived of that right referred to in the Declaration on Principles of International Law concerning Friendly Relations and Co-operation among States in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, particularly peoples under colonial and racist regimes and foreign occupation or other forms of colonial domination, nor, in accordance with the principles of the Charter and in conformity with the above-mentioned Declaration, the right of these peoples to struggle to this end and to seek and receive support;"

You can't pretend Israel's occupation of Palestine isn't a brutal reality just because the Holocaust against the Jews (which was pure evil) existed.

Could somebody knowledgeable please explain what "vetoed from history" means? Is the discussion of resolution erased from the minutes of the assembly? Or does he simply mean there was no media coverage?

Yes, Chomsky is being slightly facetious here, but pretty accurate, when he says it is vetoed from history.

The U.S. media rarely reported U.S. vetoes in the 80's & 90's.

The UN literature is also very vague. A vetoed resolution is hard to find documentation on since it is not adopted & notes to resolutions tended not to use the word veto, using 'negative vote' if giving any such info.

Veto was a highly derogatory term usually reserved for when the Russians voted against something.

which has excerpts from UNGA RES 40/168 in the vid info:

"Strongly deplores the negative vote by a permanent member of the Security Council which prevented the Council from adopting against Israel, under Chapter VII of the Charter, the 'appropriate measures' referred to in resolution 497 (1981) unanimously adopted by the Council."

Notice that the UN resolution itself does not mention the word 'veto' & doesn't even name the country (America) which vetoed res 497.

Without reference to alternative literature, on the subject, one would be hard put to find that it was America who vetoed the resolution, except of course that America has vetoed 39+ UNSC resolutions against Israeli actions (which of course isn't exactly mentioned in the mainstream media itself).

Terrorism is never acceptable. The resolution is bullshit as Chomsky, the amoral fuckbag, inadvertently explained. It goes against the essential principle of violence in direct defense of self and other. In no way are suicide attacks on buses ever in self defense nor are rockets aimed at homes ever self defense. These are acts of war. The IRA was wrong and so are the PLO.
