This is a very OLD & LARGE antique, hand wood carved hope chest or trunk. Amazing and intricate detailed carvings of 5 different scenes covering 5 sides, front & back, right & left sides and the top. The bottom is plain wood. The artistry of the carvings is impressive. It has a large decorative brass closure latch as well. The inside is deep and wide, with plenty of room for storage measuring 34 long x 18 high 16.5 wide inches. The chest looks teak and is not extremely heavy due to its fine construction and thin walls. This must have been designed to be a decorative piece and was not intended to carry luggage. The chest comes with one shelf piece which sits on the upper rim of the chest not pictured.
This hope chest / trunk is a magnificent piece of very unusual and unique furniture that you will not come across every day. In fact it was purchased in the mids 70s at a yard sale. The only maker mark is a stamp that reads "Imported from Hong Kong".
Please note the photos were taken without it being cleaned and it was quite dusty on the outside as you can see.

PLEASE NOTE, due to the size and weight, I am not sure of the costs to ship this item, local pickup is preferred. Although, I am more than willing to drop the chest off at the local UPS store listed below, you will have to pay packaging and shipping fees, cost unknown and will not be included in the sales price of the chest. Shipping you pay at an extra cost, you will have to be able to call the UPS store listed below while I am there and make payment and arrangements. The Chest is currently in Ocean City Maryland and can be picked up anywhere between there and the Washington Metro area.

  • I don't know alot about them. They are called camphor chests and the camphor smell is/was to keep the moths out. Yes, they still make reproductions today that you kind find online. I suppose that the age of it is the most important thing. They have been made since the 1800's so it's value would probably be based on it's age?

  • I have a chest just like this. The construction/lock/and carved edgings are the same. The only difference is the scene in the carvings. It was a gift to my parents when they married forty nine years ago.

I do not know if it was an antique or new at that time. My grandparents had it sent from Hong Kong to Canada when they were there on holiday.

  • Have you learned anymore information about this chest? I have one very similar to it. The construction is identical and the artwork is similar. Mine is very old. Any idea what they are worth? Thanks for posting the video. I have been looking for one like this for a long time.

  • @mike08kurtz Mike, I think the "Made in Hong Kong" kinda gives it away :) but they are nice trunks.

  • I have this very same chest, and so does my sister, but they are not antiques. We bought them about 8 years ago at a furniture store for less than $100. each. They also had carved angels and carved horses, and they come in a smaller size (about half the size of this one). I store linens and blankets in mine.

  • Hello, my name is mike, i have the same trunk almost. it was my grandmothers, how can you identify it?or know its value? could you please call me 1-480-678-2818.

it is a phoenix az area code.

  • ...cool.
