One problem is, it's in the nature of all life forms to strive to live. In their striving, they tend to consume as much as possible, & compare their well being to that of their co-beings. They strive to be better off, even if both were already in a sustainable state. It is one of the mechanism of life. Individually, we can follow an ascetic lifestyle (I try the best I can). But collectively, I am resigned to the fact that it takes a profound enlightenment to turn off the striving instinct.
