As much as I like this movie, this scene was pretty ridiculous (although I must admit, it's my favourite scene in the movie). There is no way in hell a pair of great danes could take on a fully grown adult tiger and live to bark again; not even a grizzly bear could defeat a tiger.

As I understand, they had other great danes to play the part of Duke & Turk. One of the dogs that was "fighting" the tiger, as I hear, was a hunter and could hunt cougars.
Walt Disney wanted the dogs to make contact with the tiger during the fight, and Ken Annakin, the film's director, was worried about that. In reality, the tiger would've killed the dogs. Thank goodness that didn't happen.
