Little River Canyon is located in northeast Alabama just east of Fort Payne. This river is one of the nation's longest rivers that flows across a mountain top. It changes elevation from 1900 feet above sea level to 650, creating a spectacular gorge system.

I hiked the Little River National Preserve for two days after a heavy spring rain which put river flow at a nice level. The canyon walls are nearly vertical making travel to the gorge floor difficult except for a few locations. This is one of the best outings I have had in a while as I was awed by the primeval feeling I experienced while exploring the gorge.
